Office politics implies social intrigues with a view to gaining power. This is a major challenge in many corporate settings; the high ranking officer wants to keep his position, while the low ranking officer wants to move up the corporate ladder. This gives rise to social ruckus, insidious agitation is the order of the day, everybody employs devious and subtle means; confreres backstab with hands hidden in velvet gloves, endless gossips abound under a façade of pleasing smiles.
In the midst of all these, some people appear to ride the storm with ease; they appear to be able to do the right thing at the right time, not committing errors that would bring the sword of Damocles on them. Below are some tips about becoming a winner in corporate settings.
First and foremost a potential winner in a corporate environment should learn to watch his words, silence can never be quoted, weigh your words before you let them elude your lips. If you have nothing good to say about a colleague, it would do best to keep quiet, build a reputation of someone who only talks when it is necessary, not a chatterbox.
Secondly, loyalty to your immediate boss is very important, as long as it would not jeopardize the interest of the organization. Allow your boss see that you can be relied on. It would be better if you can achieve this subtly without calling any attention to yourself in any way. This can be done by taking on jobs that seem as if nobody is willing to take, do such jobs very well, showing no signs of expectation of a reward. If a verbal commendation ensues, take it with a shrug and move on, keep changing tactics, the main idea is to create the impression that things will still move on with your boss absent and you around.
Another tactic is to keep improving yourself, cook the books as much as you can, learn as much relevant information that will be of help to you, your boss and the group as a whole, and be ready to use the information at your fingertips at the slightest opportunity. This quality sets you apart, it makes you think and do things differently.The key here again is subtlety, If the opportunity presents itself, do for the group and not for yourself, you can be sure the right people will notice your efforts. You will appear indispensable.
